The Mitohelp Foundation is a non-profit foundation. It was founded by patients and their families with the mission of giving children with mitochondrial diseases a chance of therapy and cure and to accelerate the enormous progress in research that has been achieved in the last 15 years.
To this end, we support research projects by the best research teams worldwide to develop effective treatments and cures for mitochondrial diseases. We are supported by scientists and physicians who are experts in this field. Foundation research grants are scientifically reviewed by two experts:
Prof. Dr. Markus Schuelke-Gerstenfeld
Prof. Schuelke-Gerstenfeld conducts research and teaches at Charité, Berlin's university hospital, in the Department of Pediatrics with a focus on neurology. His research focuses, among other things, on the interface of rare neuropediatric diseases - in particular mitochondrial diseases -, the genetic causes and the possible clinical treatment approaches to these diseases.
Privatdozent Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Johannes Mayr
Dr. Mayr is a chemist and the deputy head of the Mitolab special laboratory at the University Hospital for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine in Salzburg, Austria. The Mitolab is a multidisciplinary competence center with the aim of offering the most profound possible diagnostic of mitochondriopathies in accordance with standardized guidelines. In doing so, it works cross-functionally across clinical, biochemical, and genetic diagnostics and is internationally connected with other competence centers. In addition to clinical and diagnostic tasks, the Mitolab team conducts various national and international research projects.
